Find Your Tribe | #MyFridayStory No. 131

Stop waiting to be picked.

Can you remember those school ground games we used to play where we picked two sides to play against each other? Two ‘cool’ kids would get to pick the sides to play against each other. While the rest of us stand in anguish, waiting to be picked.

In his 2011 book titled Tribes: We need you to lead us (Get your Free Audible version from Amazon,) Seth Godin suggests rather than waiting to be picked, we should pick ourselves. A tribe can be any group of people, large or small, who are connected, have a leader and an idea. For millennia, we have been seeking out tribes.

It’s in our DNA.

Pick yourself to start something, to do something remarkable. Choose to form a tribe of like-minded people, all hungry for change. The ability to bring people together, all longing for connection and meaning, is now more possible than ever before.

Yet, most of us ignore the call to lead. When you fight to protect the status quo at all costs, asking for ‘permission,’ you risk turning into what Seth calls, a ‘Sheepwalker.’

Sheepwalkers don’t do very well.

Picking yourself is one of the wisest things you can do today. When you decide to lead, you have emancipated yourself from the anguish of waiting. When you start a movement to do amazing, exciting things, you attract like-minded people. The opportunity to lead exists everywhere, in our daily lives and at work.

Who wants to be a plodder?

No one wakes up in the morning and decides, ‘Today, I’m going to do mediocre work.’ What happens is we become compliant. We stop challenging the status quo and get comfortable with being told what to do. When we say, ‘That’s how it has always been done.’ We fall into a rut of ‘obedience’ rather than being open-minded to change and innovation.

If you are passionate about what you do and you have the drive to make it happen, you will find a tribe. There is a tribe of like-minded fellow employees, book-club members, golfers, customers, or readers all waiting for you to connect and lead them.

Today, the internet has eliminated the barriers of geography, cost, and time. The enormous amount of information that is available together with social media, it’s possible to connect folks who care about their Xbox, or a political party, religious movement, or a new way to fight poverty.

You will never be 100% ready. So, start.

Leap first.

If it is not you who is going to lead us, then who?

We need you to step up and lead. Leadership comes from someone just like you. If you have a passion, a cause, or a purpose to do something great, your time is now.

It’s not easy, but it’s easier than you think.

Have an awesome Easter weekend, stay home, stay safe! 😄

As always, thanks for reading, I appreciate it tremendously 🙏
